Goumenissa Chatzivaritis Estate

18,60

Goumenissa Red by Chatzivaritis Estate is one of those wines that clearly shows why Goumenissa holds such a distinctive place on the Greek wine map. Xinomavro brings intensity, structure and that signature mix of red fruit, tomato and olive, while Negoska softens the edges, adds riper fruit and makes the whole wine feel more velvety.
It comes from organically and biodynamically cultivated vines in Filyria, within the Goumenissa wine-growing zone, on sandy-clay soils that help the wine balance power with freshness. Chatzivaritis Estate released its first PDO Goumenissa wines in 2007 and has strongly linked its identity with the area, working with respect for local varieties and a more authentic, hands-on approach.
In the winemaking process, Xinomavro and Negoska co-ferment in a wooden tank, allowing the two varieties to come together from the start rather than simply being blended at the end. Extended maceration, malolactic fermentation and 8 months on the lees follow, before the wine spends 12 months in French oak barrels and another 6 months in bottle. The result is a red wine with depth, structure and beautiful development, without losing its energy.
In the glass, it has a deep purple colour and a complex aromatic profile with raspberry, blackberry, cherry, olive, tomato, vanilla and sweet spices. On the palate, it is rich, with structured tannins, intense flavour and a long finish that leaves a lovely impression of red fruit, spice and earth. This is a red wine made for the table, not just the shelf: open it with roasted or slow-cooked meats, red sauces, pasta, yellow cheeses and dishes with deeper Mediterranean flavours.
