Plagies Ai Lia Papaioannou Wines
Plagies Ai Lia by Papaioannou Estate is a dry white wine made from 100% Assyrtiko, expressing a more structured, articulate, and gastronomic side of the variety through the vineyard of Nemea. On the estate’s official website, it is listed as a local Corinthian dry white wine, sourced from estate-owned vineyards, with production of around 12,000 bottles, while the current label listing shows it as the 2025 vintage.
In the glass, it shows a bright pale yellow color with luminous highlights, hinting at its lively and pure character. On the nose, intense aromas of yellow fruit and lemon blossom stand out, exactly as described by the producer, giving the wine aromatic clarity, freshness, and fine varietal intensity. Here, Assyrtiko is expressed with a slightly riper fruit profile, while still retaining its signature vibrancy.
On the palate, it is dry, full, and very well balanced, with excellent acidity, a point also emphasized in the estate’s official tasting note. Its structure gives it seriousness and tension, while the freshness of the fruit and the clean finish make it both highly enjoyable and substantial. This is a white wine that combines volume and intensity with precision and elegance, showing how beautifully Assyrtiko can adapt to this specific terroir.
It pairs beautifully with fish, seafood, and white meats, as the producer also notes, and it can work especially well with more demanding seafood dishes or lemon-based sauces. The label was also awarded a gold medal at Gilbert & Gaillard 2023 for the 2022 vintage, reinforcing its image as a carefully made and consistently noteworthy white wine from the estate.
