Mavrokountoura by Avantis Estate is a red wine with a clearly Euboean identity and a very distinctive character. It comes from Black Kountoura of Kymi, a small-berried clone of Mandilaria, with darker fruit, velvety tannins and intense personality.
Vinification begins with 3 days of cold maceration and continues with classic red vinification and long maceration, allowing the wine to gain colour, structure and depth. Ageing for 12 months in new Ermitage oak barrels adds smoke, spices, coffee and a more complex texture, without hiding the power of the variety.
In the glass, it has an opaque ruby colour and brings black fruit, plum, jam, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, sweet spices and a subtle smoky feel. On the palate, it is rich, rounded and structured, with medium to high acidity, intense but velvety tannins and a long finish.
With a little time in the glass, it becomes even more interesting, revealing earthier and spicier notes. It is a red wine with locality, depth and ageing interest, ideal for anyone looking for something Greek, rare and not predictable.
It pairs very well with lamb, slow-cooked beef, game, BBQ, country sausages, mushrooms, dishes with smoky sauces, red stews and mature cheeses.
