Bekari is a red grape variety with thin skin, making it suitable for the production of light red and rosé wines. It is vigorous and productive, but sensitive to drought, and is cultivated on a limited scale, mainly in the Ioannina region of Greece.
Compared to Vlachiko, Bekari produces wines with deeper color and higher levels of tannins and alcohol. For this reason, the two varieties are often vinified together to create wines with greater aromatic and flavor complexity.
